The client is a developer who have recently showed interest in the hospitality industry – “The Rotlo”, being their first venture.
Chirag Shah &Associates has been working with this client since many years for the various housing and commercial projects.

‘ The Rotlo’ is a traditional Gujarati setting born from the need of an restaurant where the menu and the ambience are in sync with each other in the best possible manner, thus catering to the customers not just with taste palette but with an environment that speaks of tradition, culture and the forgotten art and crafts of this region.
The overall layout consists of hut like structures built with basic masonry frame separated by narrow, well-lit lanes an attempt to replicate the vernacular built-fabric of a quaint Gujarati village. The planning also houses an entrance courtyard to accommodate ‘Dairo’ (local theatre art), shehnai or flute recitals and puppet shows with a typical kathiyawadi style ‘charpayee’ seating.

We have used decorative motifs in vibrant colors as per traditional standards to express the culture. The RCC (ips) flooring has been painted in rangoli style to give an authentic feel. Traditional wall paintings have been researched from scriptures and replicated by local artisans. Each artwork is aptly placed in each space with respect to its significance, meaning and importance, moreover, Exterior walls have been textured in cement plaster giving it a classical cow dung ‘Lipan’ effect.
Doors, Windows, Grills and frescoes have also been extensively reused as the project was budget bound. These elements, along with the traditional style benches, khaat & tables crafted from locally available neem and mango wood makes this project a sustainable one.
The food is served in authentic, handcrafted earthenware vessels and plates stitched from leaves reflecting the Gujarati ‘Parmapara’ of warmth and hospitality.
